Employment Development Program

Creating Safe Spaces for Learning and Employment at Youth Homes Thrift Shop

Our Why

Navigating adult life at 18 years old after exiting the foster care system is challenging at best. Maintaining stable employment is key to a sustainable future, however many of the young people we support lack key skills and role models. They may find jobs, but they face challenges keeping them.

Our How

Through collaboration with the California Department of Rehabilitation (DOR), we’ve launched the Employment Development Program (EDP)

Youth Homes Thrift Shop offers opportunities to observe and acquire employment skills in an inclusive, collaborative environment where mistakes are viewed as opportunities for growth and development.  Salary and remuneration are managed by the Department of Rehabilitation, while the Thrift Shop team focuses on creating a supportive and safe atmosphere for growth.

The Employment Development Journey

Our collective efforts aim to empower youth and equip them with essential skills and confidence that hopefully allows them to continue a successful and sustainable employment journey.

The Thrift Shop is a safe place for youth to gain socialization skills and have their basic needs met.

A Story of Growth

With support from their Life Skills Coach, the Thrift Shop Manager, and our volunteer team, one youth, Anna, was invited to join an expansion project at the shop. She became project manager, overseeing renovations and scheduled the steps to renovate the space. Shelves were disassembled, walls were plastered and painted, and custom furniture was built. The project's completion in July 2023 marked more than a revamped space, it was a celebration of personal transformation, boosting Anna’s self-confidence and sense of worth. See photos below!
