Something Wild and Unexpected

Ano Nuevo State Park, Pescadero

At Año Nuevo, the landscape itself is an experience. For youth whose worlds can often feel small or constrained, stepping into a place filled with open coastline and hundreds of elephant seals—massive bulls clashing, mothers tending to newborn pups—was both overwhelming and mesmerizing. Tristan* was captivated and peppered the docent and ranger with questions, absorbing everything he could and later declaring himself the group’s resident expert. He’s already planning a return trip with his grandmother—an idea that, not long ago, might not have felt within reach.

Not every moment was big or dramatic, but each one mattered. Tristan spotted a rare San Francisco garter snake just minutes after announcing that was all he hoped to see. Sonia* found joy climbing the dunes, while Daniel* discovered an unexpected fondness for the seals themselves. On the drive home along Highway 1—another first—the group fell into a quiet, shared calm, the kind that comes from a full day outdoors. Later, laughter broke through again as they competed to imitate the booming calls of elephant seals. These moments don’t resolve everything our youth carry with them, but they create space for curiosity, for lightness, for connection to something beyond themselves. With continued opportunities like this, those moments can begin to take root in ways that last far beyond a single day.
