Facing Fears Along The Shore
Muir Woods, Mill Valley
The serenity of Muir Woods inspires you to slow down, even when that doesn’t come easily. Just a few months before, Janelle* could only walk half a block. After weeks of physical therapy and persistence, she made her way 2.5 miles along the trails, navigating hills and uneven ground beneath towering redwoods. Later, standing at Muir Beach with the water at her feet, she took in a well-deserved moment of joyful peace. These kinds of milestones don’t happen all at once, but they build over time, through repeated effort and the support to keep going.
For Gage*, the ocean brought up complex feelings. After multiple near-drowning experiences, he was deeply afraid of even getting close to the water. He stood at the edge for a long time trying to find a sense of safety. Slowly, that distance became smaller. A game with another client, chasing the water back and forth without getting their shoes wet, provided comfort. From there, he moved closer, eventually noticing the texture of sea foam in his hands. The day made room for experiences that don’t always come easily, like trying again, moving at your own pace, and feeling supported in the process. Those moments plant seeds for continuous growth.
