Therapeutic Behavioral Services
Short-term family-based behavioral intervention
Our Challenge
Addressing a child’s challenging behaviors, especially when they are disruptive to the family unit, can be frustrating and painful, and actions taken may make things worse, not better.
Therapeutic Behavior Services (TBS) is a community-based program offered by Youth Homes to help reduce challenging behaviors that are placing a youth at risk of hospitalization or placement within a residential treatment program. TBS is also utilized by a youth who are transitioning from a residential placement into a family home environment -- where the extra support helps ensure a positive and successful experience.
Our Approach
TBS is a short-term, intensive family-based program that focuses on emphasizing the family’s strengths and abilities while building skills to help reduce negative behaviors. Youth Homes approach is collaborative and includes working with all available members of the child’s family, as well as the primary mental health provider, to address one to two behaviors that jeopardize the child’s ability to remain in his or her current home or school environment.
TBS services are provided in the home, school, or other environments where the challenging behaviors are occurring. The short-term-focused approach leads to positive and measurable change within a few months.
What to Expect
After collaborating with the youth, family members, treatment team, and TBS counselor, a customized treatment plan is developed. Treatment plans are tailored to each youth and family and take into consideration the family’s unique circumstances, needs, values, and vision for change. Treatment plans include measurable goals, individual strengths, support systems, and the desired behaviors.
Youth Homes TBS Behavioral Support Counselors will work with the youth and family to develop tools and build skills to create sustainable, positive change. Change that can be continued even after services end.
